Summer Camp…at a hospital?

Students learn about health and healthcare at SVMHS camps

SALINAS, CA, July 24, 2012 - Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System’s annual Asthma Day Camp is now underway. The weeklong event has giventhousands of children some of their first positive experiences with outdoor physical activity, and has given them necessary education about their asthma. For many children, this is their first real outdoor experience, as they have been limited by asthma. The purpose of Asthma Day Camp is to help raise self-esteem and confidence, with children learning how to avoid asthma "triggers", learning about medications, breathing and relaxation exercises, nutrition, when to call a doctor and much more. In addition, the SVMHS Asthma Day Camp will feature members of the Hartnell College soccer team who will speak to and play with the kids on Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.

Also underway is the final week of Medical Adventure Camp. Serving students who are 10 to 12 years old, Medical Adventure Camp provides youngsters with an up close and personal look at the many career and volunteer opportunities in healthcare. In this two-week camp, the children learn about a variety of health-related topics in interactive classes and activities led by hospital staff and physicians. Through a Native American Indian theme, the camp provides positive role models, and exposure to the benefits of a caring community.

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System just completed its Summer Health Institute. This five-week program exposed high school students, recruited from local health academies, to health-careers through an articulated program using a case study methodology. During the program, students developed an understanding of hospital organization, diagnosis, care plan development, patient assessment and treatment. They received instruction at Hartnell College for computer program design, presentation skills, and spent a week in the Nursing Skills Labs. Each student presented an "outstanding" case study review for our medical panel as their final exam.
