Salinas, CA, September 13, 2013 – Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) has received Chest Pain Center with PCI Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), becoming the only hospital in Monterey County to achieve this distinction.
As an Accredited Chest Pain Center with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System ensures that patients get the treatment they need in the critical early stages of a heart attack, even before reaching the hospital. The advanced heart care at SVMHS works seamlessly with Emergency Medical Services to respond to anyone complaining of chest pain or other symptoms of a heart attack during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved.
“People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” says SVMHS Cardiology Department Chair, Timothy Albert, MD. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.”
SCPC is an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to establish centers of excellence aimed at increasing quality, reducing costs and improving patient satisfaction. Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation follow standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. In addition, the accreditation recognizes SVMHS has demonstrated a commitment to engage patients in heart care which promotes a healthier lifestyle to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.
“The success of any healthcare organization is measured by the level of commitment and passion of its staff to do their best,” says SVMHS President/CEO Pete Delgado. “I am extremely proud of this latest achievement which demonstrates the teamwork at Salinas Valley Memorial to meet the highest standards in quality care.”
To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, SVMHS engaged in rigorous reevaluation and refinement of its cardiac care processes in order to integrate the healthcare industry’s most successful practices and protocol-based medicine developed by leading experts in cardiac care. Salinas Valley Memorial’s advanced heart care program encompasses the entire continuum of care for patients and provides coordination at critical stages including dispatch, the Emergency Medical System, emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, and community education programs.
