SVMHS Invites Community to Celebrate Sixty

SALINAS, CA, March 14, 2013 –
Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital opened its doors sixty years ago. Those doors have remained open for the community every day and every hour since that date in 1953. It’s a good reason to celebrate.

“The Celebrate Sixty event will honor the past and look to the future,” said Harry Wardwell, president of the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System board of directors.  “Who would have imagined sixty years ago, robots would play a critical role in assisting surgeons? The advancements in healthcare are amazing and yet we have remained true to our founding principals.”

At the official grand opening six decades ago, the pioneers of what would become Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System unveiled a plaque. It dedicated the hospital “to the health of the community.”  That forward thinking commitment could have included any phrase about healing the sick or advancing medical care. Instead “the heath of the community” became the cornerstone of care at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System.

One of the decorated guests taking part in the 60th Anniversary celebration is 96 year-old Bataan Death March survivor Roy Diaz. The Salinas WWII Veteran was on hand for the original dedication because the hospital is named “in memory of the men and women of the armed forces who made the supreme sacrifice for their community and nation.” Sixty years later, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System is honored to have Sgt. Diaz return to the ground where quality healthcare in Monterey County began.

The public party will take place on Thursday, March 28th at 5:30pm at the Heart Center Circle. For your convenience, we encourage the use of free valet parking at our parking structure. Refreshments including a Celebrate Sixty cake will be served.
