SVMHS Summer Health Institute Students Present Medical Case Studies
Salinas, CA, July 9, 2014 – Students enrolled in the Summer Health Institute program at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) will present their medical case studies to their healthcare mentors and peers on Friday, July 11th.
The presentations reflect a culmination of classroom instruction, hands on learning and lab work. The five-week Summer Health Institute provides an opportunity for high school students with an interest in healthcare to engage in an environment focused on quality patient care and outcomes. Applicants undergo a rigorous selection process. This year, 22 students represent various high schools throughout Monterey County including Salinas, Alisal, Monterey, Norte Dame, North County and Seaside.
Each year, staff and physicians at SVMHS volunteer to work with Summer Health Institute students through lesson plans, exercises and internships to help the students develop an understanding of hospital organization, diagnosis, care plan development and patient assessment, treatment and experience. In addition to knowledge and skill based learning at SVMHS, the students also received a week of instruction at Hartnell College in Salinas and a field trip to Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto.
The final exam includes a group project presenting a real life case study to a medical panel. The public is welcome to attend. The Friday presentation schedule is as follows:
9:30 – Respiratory Case Study (Alyssa Gomez, Amulya Kunduru, Angelica Sabillo, and Rosaura Sierra)
10:00 – Burn Case Study (Daisy Arroyo, Maria Juinio, Olga Narciso, Paul Salinas, and Rosa Torres)
