Stroke Awareness Community Event
Salinas, CA, April 29, 2014 – Stroke is the most common cause of disability in adults with 795,000 people suffering from a stroke every year in the United States. Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) emergency room physician Jay Pennock, MD will address the issue of stroke prevention and awareness in a free Ask the Experts presentation May 8th.
Dr. Pennock joined the medical staff and the Emergency Department of Salinas Valley Memorial in 1996 and has treated hundreds of stroke patients. He is chair of the Physician well-being Committee and the physician director of Wellness at Work – a healthcare collaborative of SVMHS and Central Coast VNA & Hospice. Dr. Pennock is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
SVMHS has received 2014 Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission earning the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality and safety based on a review of compliance with national standards, clinical guidelines and outcomes of care. SVMHS is also a Stroke Receiving Center for Monterey County equipped with a special team to provide rapid diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients, designated areas in the hospital with specially trained staff to care for patients with stroke and integrated services from several departments within the hospital.
The Ask the Experts free community event on Stroke Awareness will take place Thursday, May 8 at 6pm. Dr. Pennock will be speaking at the SVMHS, 450 E. Romie Lane, Salinas, Downing Resource Center, Room A in the lower level of parking structure. SVMHS offers Spanish interpretation service at its Ask the Experts events.
