SALINAS, CA, February 6, 2014 – Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) is responding to community need and once again partnering with Monterey County Health Department to offer free flu vaccine to families who haven’t been vaccinated this season. SVMHS is hosting a second easy access flu clinic on Saturday, February 22 from 11am to 2pm.

“We are extremely grateful for the response to our initial flu clinic last month,” says Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System president/CEO Pete Delgado. “By partnering with the county, we were able to provide more than a thousand doses of free flu vaccine to families in our community. We are excited to be able to offer this valuable public service again this month.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports California is seeing a higher number than normal of influenza related deaths this season. The CDC indicates the unusually severe flu season has claimed the lives of at least 147 young and middle-aged people in California.

With the flu season still at its peak, it is not too late to become vaccinated which not only helps protect individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus. Patients only need to fill out minimal paperwork.

In addition to the free vaccine, SVMHS is using the clinic as an opportunity to extend outreach to people needing health care insurance. The MedAssist program at SVMHS provides the community with free resources to help navigate the insurance exchange programs created under healthcare reform. SVMHS offers free bilingual certified counselors to the public for face-to-face help and support. The counselors are available 40 hours a week including evening appointments. An information table will be at the flu clinic and the public can learn more at or by calling (877) 423-1537.

SVMHS and Monterey County Health Department are urging families who have not received the flu vaccine to take advantage of this free community event. The walk up clinic takes place at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, 450 E. Romie Lane, Salinas on Saturday, February 22 from 11am-2pm. Registered nurses from SVMHS will be administrating the free vaccine on a first come, first serve basis and quantities are limited. You can find more information on the flu clinic at or call (831) 759-1890.
